🚂 About Ethio-Djibouti Railway (EDR)

The Ethio-Djibouti Railway Share Company (EDR) was established in April 2017 following a historic bilateral agreement between Ethiopia and Djibouti. It is a pioneering joint venture dedicated to operating and maintaining the Addis Ababa–Djibouti Railway, a critical logistics corridor for the Horn of Africa.

Ownership & Governance

The company operates with an initial capital of USD 500 million. The ownership structure reflects a strong partnership: the Ethiopian Railway Corporation (ERC) holds a 72% share, while the Société Djiboutienne de Chemin de Fer (SDCF) owns 25%. The remaining shares are held by key Ethiopian ministries.

The Railway Line

The railway spans 756 km, starting from Sebeta (southwest of Addis Ababa) and running through major hubs like Adama, Mieso, and Dire Dawa before reaching the ports of Djibouti. It features 20 stations and a state-of-the-art dispatching command center in Labu. Since January 1, 2024, the railway has been fully operated and maintained by local staff, marking a significant milestone in national capacity building.

Mission & Vision

Vision: To become the top logistics choice in the corridor by 2027.
Mission: Provide reliable, efficient, and profitable railway transport services to support the development of both countries.
Values: Integrity, Customer Centricity, Safety, and Cost Efficiency.
