Based on the history provided, the goal and mission of Norwegian Church Aid (NCA) can be summarized as follows:

  • To Provide Emergency Relief and Humanitarian Aid: From its humble beginnings helping destitute people in Europe after WWII to its major breakthrough in Biafra (Nigeria), a core goal has always been to deliver food, water, and assistance to refugees and victims of war and natural disasters globally.

  • To Eradicate Poverty and Injustice: Through long-term development projects (agriculture, health, education, etc.) and its youth organization, Changemaker, the NGO aims to “work creatively and politically to remove the causes of injustice and poverty in the world.”

  • To Empower Local Populations: Starting in the 1990s, the goal shifted from sending Norwegian experts to building partnerships. The organization aims to utilize local expertise and knowledge, working through local, national, and international networks (like the ACT Alliance) rather than just direct intervention.

  • To Influence Attitudes and Policy (Advocacy): A major goal is information work and advocacy. This involves lobbying, producing educational materials, and running campaigns to change attitudes and influence political decisions regarding climate, peace, international trade, and debt.

  • Motivating Force: The text explicitly states that “Christian compassion” has been the motivating force behind their work since the beginning.
