Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) News

Today, the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) fourth and final filling was completed, according to Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. This is a significant step forward for the Horn of Africa nation in meeting its population’s energy demands, which number over 120 million.

PM Abiy praised all Ethiopians who helped with the enormous hydropower project by providing money, knowledge, labor, and prayers in a social media post. He suggested all national endeavors should be modeled after the cooperative spirit seen during the dam’s construction.

The biggest hydroelectric facility in Africa, the GERD, has caused regional unrest since Egypt and Sudan, two downstream nations, dispute over how to fill and run it. PM Abiy admitted that there were several obstacles facing the initiative, including pressure from both the local and international arenas.

He did, however, add that Ethiopia was able to overcome all challenges and accomplish its objective by remaining united and persistent. The prime minister acknowledged that while this was a significant milestone, construction on the dam is still ongoing and promised Ethiopia would continue to support the project to its completion.

He said, “We have arrived at the summit of the hill, not the bottom of the hill.”

The second round of negotiations concerning the dam’s operations and filling took place in Addis Ababa this month after being conducted in Cairo last month.
